After consultations with political parties and the Central Election Commission (CEC), Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has officially decreed and scheduled the next parliamentary elections.
The regular elections for the Kosovo Assembly will take place on February 9 of the upcoming year, Osmani announced.
The decision, which was shared on her Facebook profile, also instructs the CEC to undertake all necessary actions for the organization and conduct of the elections.
For months, there has been widespread speculation regarding the possibility of new elections in Kosovo. Some opposition parties that are calling for the removal of the Kosovo government led by Albin Kurti have even advocated for its overthrow, with the aim of holding early elections. Despite these discussions, no concrete steps were taken towards early elections.
It wasn’t until the end of July that President Osmani convened a meeting with political party leaders to consult on setting a date for the regular elections, with potential dates ranging from January 26 to February 16.
The leaders of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK)—the largest opposition parties in Kosovo—expressed a preference for holding the elections as early as possible, specifically on January 26.
Meanwhile, Mimoza Kusari-Lila, head of the parliamentary group of the ruling Self-Determination Movement (LVV) and president of the Alternative party, suggested February 9 and 16 as more suitable dates.
According to reports from Pristina-based Koha, which cited its own sources, the ruling LVV proposed February 2 as the election date.
Notably, the meeting at the Kosovo presidency was not attended by parties representing the Serbian community, namely Srpska Lista.
Following the consultations, President Osmani promised to announce the election date as soon as possible. Political parties were given until today to submit their preferred dates.
If the current government led by Albin Kurti remains in office until the elections, it will be the first administration since Kosovo’s self-declared independence in 2008 to complete a full four-year term without collapsing prematurely.
