On the occasion of World Children’s Day, a forum was held today at the amphitheater of the Faculty of Technical Sciences in North Mitrovica. The event, which began at noon, focused on the ongoing concerns about the safety and rights of Serbian children in Kosovo. A central message delivered during the forum was: „Regardless of the international community or their security forces in Kosovo, our children are not safe.“
The forum featured speeches from various speakers, including teachers from Serbian schools across Kosovo, both north and south of the Ibar River, as well as a mother from Žitkovac, a village in the north, who shared her personal experience. The event was preceded by posters placed around the city this morning, promoting the forum’s message. At the event, the posters were held by female students from the University of Pristina.
Among the attendees were leaders of the Srpska Lista, directors of primary and secondary Serbian schools in Kosovo, educators, and students. They gathered to address the reportedly alarming situation facing Serbian children in Kosovo.
Before the event, Srpska Lista met with a group of Serbian youth who were allegedly victims of excessive force or attacks by Kosovo security forces.
During the forum, speakers highlighted a range of issues affecting Serbian children in Kosovo, from the basic challenge of obtaining school books to concerns about their overall safety. One of the key points raised was the uncertainty surrounding the lives of these children, particularly in the current political climate.
The forum also addressed ongoing violations of the rights of Serbian children, both north and south of the Ibar River. The discussions reportedly underscored the threats to their safety, their right to education, and the broader challenges of living in an environment marked by ethnic divisions and tensions.
Following the forum, around a hundred attendees participated in a protest march to the end of the city’s promenade, culminating at Braće Milić Square. The procession was led by female students holding posters depicting injured children, symbolizing the suffering of the younger population.
Kosovo police, including both uniformed officers and those in plain clothes, monitored the protest. They photographed the conclusion of the rally at Braće Milić Square, documenting the end of an event that underscores the urgent need for better protection of children’s rights in Kosovo.
