A Kosovo Post sign has been installed on the premises of the former Serbian Poštanska štedionica bank in the heart of Zvecan, adjacent to the now-closed Serbian Post Office. The exterior of the building has been refurbished, marking another step in the expansion of Kosovo’s postal services in northern municipalities.
On-site verification confirms that the glass storefront now bears the Kosovo Post logo, along with the official name and service schedule. Additionally, a signboard has been placed displaying the branch’s name, „Zyra Postare / Pošta“ and its designation as „Zveçan 2 – Zvečan 2.“ The working hours of the new post office are also publicly posted.
However, traces of the previous closure remain. The building still bears remnants of the seal placed by the Kosovo Privatization Agency, including an official notice from August of last year. While the privatization agency’s and police security tapes have been broken, the interior of the facility remains in an unfinished state. Inside, old furniture and equipment are still present as renovation work continues.
At this stage, it remains unclear when the newly branded post office will begin operations. Meanwhile, the adjacent Serbian Post Office remains in the same state as when it was originally sealed.
Albanian-language media report that a similar transformation has taken place in Zubin Potok.
Closure of Serbian institutions
This development follows a series of closures of Serbian institutions in the region. In May last year, Kosovo authorities shut down all branches of the Serbian Poštanska štedionica bank in northern Kosovo, affecting five branches and the Serbian Ministry of Finance’s Treasury Directorate.
Less than four months later, a similar operation led to the closure and sealing of Serbian post offices in the region. The crackdown saw the closure of three post offices in North Mitrovica, two in Zvecan, one in Zubin Potok, and three in Leposavic.
The first Kosovo Post office in northern Kosovo was opened in August 2023 in North Mitrovica’s main pedestrian area. Another followed in June 2023 in the village of Banjska, within Zvecan municipality, located in the „Rajska Banja“ health and tourism complex.
