The Basic Prosecution Office in Mitrovica has filed an indictment against two individuals — one of whom is a sitting member of the Kosovo Assembly — in connection with an attack on journalists that occurred in Leposavic in 2023.
According to the prosecution, the suspects are identified by the initials S.S. and U.V.
However, Pristina-based outlet Gazeta Express reports that S.S. refers to Slavko Simić, a high-ranking official of the Serb List (Srpska Lista) and current member of the Kosovo Parliament. The same source notes that Simić was questioned by prosecutors two months ago in relation to the case.
The incident in question took place on June 16, 2023, during a protest triggered by the visit of former minister E.K. to the northern town of Leposavic.
Following the vehicle’s departure, S.S. is accused of instructing the crowd to attack the media. This led to what prosecutors describe as an “assault” on journalists and media personnel from Kosovo.
The attack allegedly involved not only additional stun grenades but also beatings with fists, kicks, and hard objects such as paving stones, bricks, and paint. As a result, two journalists reportedly sustained serious physical injuries.
Simić is being charged with “participation in a group committing a criminal offense” and “hooliganism.”
As for the second defendant, identified only as U.V., few details have been made public. However, the prosecution alleges that he “directly participated in the use of force against Kosovo journalists.”
He faces charges of “assault” as well as “participation in a group committing a criminal offense and hooliganism.”
