Journalist and N1 News Director, Jugoslav Cosic, told the Belgrade-based weekly Vreme that „the key threat to media freedom and the sense of security of the media in Serbia is the behavior of the President of Serbia.“
„He gives an example to others when he says that we are American television – which he has been doing for three years, with a clear context that we are some sort of traitors who are working against the interests of our country and against the government. According to the theory of imitation of the French sociologist Gabriel Tarde – all echelons below him accept his views and messages, and multiply them. For instance, the Minister of the Internal Affairs personally declared that N1 is ‘CIA television’. The Minister of the Police himself is directly placing N1 journalists at risk. This is unheard of, it does not happen anywhere,“ Cosic said, Beta reported.
In his interview, Cosic assessed that Vucic „is directly and deliberately intimidating the media, although everything he says he sweetens with the so-called personal freedom of speech“.
„Journalists and media which are not under the control of the authorities are afraid. The entire society is. The cause of this fear is Aleksandar Vucic himself. I don’t know what will happen in the future. I am terribly worried,“ he concluded.
