The US Special Envoy to the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, Richard Grenell said that Kosovo Prime Minister, Albin Kurti made a serious mistake when he decided to partially abolish taxes on goods from Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Grenell wrote on Twitter that he does not support Kurti’s “half measure” and reiterated the US position that taxes should be completely abolished.
“We do not support Prime Minister Kurti’s half measure. Our position is quite clear: the tariffs must be completely dropped. Mr Kurti is making a serious mistake – and that was made clear to President Thaci at the White House today,” he tweeted.
Pristina-based Gazeta Express reported that unless Pristina abolishes taxes by Friday, US Special Envoy to the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, Richard Grenell is “expected to take the first step.”
Kosovo Prime Minister, Albin Kurti announced on Thursday that he would abolish taxes on imports of raw materials from Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina on March 15th, while the taxes on all other products would be lifted on April 1st – if Serbia fulfills two conditions.
Kurti said he had made the decision to partially abolish the taxes with his coalition partner – LDK. Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister, Avdullah Hoti, however, soon denied these allegations, saying that Kurti’s decision on the taxes had not been made jointly and announced that the LDK would step out of the government if the taxes were not lifted unconditionally.
On the other hand, Kurti’s announcement was also met with disapproval from part of the Kosovo opposition. The former Kosovo Prime Minister, Ramush Haradinaj thus referred to Kurti as a „fraud“, who „surrendered to Serbia“
