The deadline for holding pre-election campaigns in Germany for the upcoming Kosovo parliamentary elections has passed, according to German regulations. The German Ambassador in Pristina informed the public last night about the country’s specific regulations regarding pre-election activities of foreign parties on German soil.
The German Embassy in Pristina has notified both the Kosovo Ministry of Foreign Affairs and political parties in Kosovo about the specific rules regarding campaign activities on German soil ahead of the parliamentary elections in Kosovo, scheduled for February 9, 2024.
Ambassador Rode emphasized that while campaigns for elections in other countries can be organized in Germany, they are subject to strict conditions. „The regulation specifies that permits to hold campaign-related events are generally not granted if the event occurs less than three months before the election date in the respective country,“ Rode stated.
In other words, the timeline for such events has already passed, as the parliamentary elections in Kosovo have been set for February 9.
„In connection with the upcoming parliamentary elections in Kosovo, we have informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and political parties about our specific regulations. These rules apply to campaigns for Kosovo’s elections taking place on German soil. The regulation stipulates, among other things, that a permit will typically not be granted if the campaign event occurs within three months of the election date,“ Rode explained.
Although the official election campaign period has yet to begin in Kosovo, Rohde’s statement comes amid active campaigning by the Vetëvendosje (Self-Determination) movement and other political groups. Germany, home to a significant Albanian diaspora, has long been a focal point for political outreach by Kosovo’s parties. Both the ruling government and opposition leaders frequently visit Germany to connect with this crucial demographic. Vetëvendosje, led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, has consistently emphasized the importance of the diaspora in its political strategy.
