An excavator belonging to a company engaged in the demolition and removal of illegal structures was set on fire last night in South Mitrovica, local authorities confirmed.
The incident was reported on Monday by the mayor of South Mitrovica, Faton Peci, who strongly condemned the act, describing it as a criminal and intimidating attack that poses a direct threat to those working to ensure public order and safety in the city.
“I strongly condemn this despicable and cowardly act. This criminal action represents a direct threat to everyone engaged in making Mitrovica a city governed by order and public peace,” Peci said.
Despite the incident, the mayor stressed that the attack would not deter the local authorities from continuing their work.
“This will not intimidate us. The fight against illegality, crime, and disorder will not stop,” he added.
Peci also called on the relevant institutions to intensify their efforts to clarify the case as soon as possible.
“I urge law enforcement authorities to step up their activities so that this case can be fully resolved without delay,” he said.
Addressing those responsible for the attack, the mayor sent a pointed message, stating that it is not the excavator that demolishes, but the mayor himself.
Police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
