The Orthodox Church in the small village of Sredska near Prizren was damaged last night, when a small metal cross above the altar of the church was turned upside down, a number of stone slabs were desecrated while bullet casings were found after presumably been shot at the church dome.
The details were confirmed to KoSSev by the Prizren parish. The incident was also registered in a report by the Kosovo police, although without details, as well as that of damage to glass at a mosque in Kacanik where the suspect was identified and released.
The duty priests informed the parish that they found bullet casings from a hunting rifle in a nearby bell tower, and it is assumed that the attackers fired a rifle at the church dome from there, because small bullet depressions were visible on the metal with which the turret is coated.
The police conducted an investigation yesterday between 19:30 and 20:30.
The parish of Prizren states that in recent times, desecrations or robberies of churches in the Sredska parish and the Prizren area have been frequent.
The damage to the church was confirmed in the daily report of the Kosovo Police, it is suspected that part of the roof of the church was targeted and damaged by unknown persons, and that police patrols arrived at the scene and that the investigation is ongoing.
This Serb-majority village was badly damaged in 1999, and the first returnee came in mid-2002. According to the 2011 census, which was mostly boycotted by Serbs, there are 58 Serbs, mostly older, 9 Albanians and two Turks.
Also, the police report states that last night in the village of Kovacevac in the municipality of Kacanik, a man was arrested on suspicion of damaging the glass of the mosque in the village. The suspect was released after questioning. The area is populated almost exclusively by ethnic Albanians.
