The Austrian Vice-Chancellor, Heinz-Christian Strache said that he believes that the initiative for the exchange of territories, which was discussed by the Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic and his Kosovo counterpart, Hashim Thaci, is the only way to finally resolve Kosovo’s Gordian knot. Strache reiterated that he supports the idea of territory exchange.
Strache estimated at a recent meeting with the representatives of the Serbian community in Austria, with the theme of „Together for a Better Future“, that the problem of Kosovo must be resolved because it is blocking Belgrade’s and Pristina’s path towards the EU, while also having a negative impact on stability and peace in the region.
„There is no EU accession if this problem isn’t solved,“ he reiterated the well-known position of Vienna and Brussels.
He said that Austria, as a country known as the mediator in resolving conflicts, should propose a peace conference for resolving the Kosovo issue.
„Austrian Chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, who has excellent contacts with Pristina, should exert his influence there, and I, as a representative of the interests of Serbs, would do it in Belgrade,“ said Strache.
He criticized Pristina’s reaction on failing to enter INTERPOL and explained that he was not in favour of Kosovo’s admission into the organization. Strache said that he accepted that Vienna votes in favor of membership only after Kurz’s insistence and after experts emphasized its importance for a more successful fight against international crime.
He also said that he was convinced that Kosovo would not be able to win the two-thirds majority required for admission to INTERPOL, also claiming that he clearly opposes Kosovo’s membership in UNESCO, as well as the formation of the Kosovo Army.
Strache underlined that this problem cannot be solved without Serbia, which is a key country in the region.
