Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti is currently in the United States attending the Democratic National Convention. On the sidelines of the convention, Kurti met with U.S. Senator Chris Murphy to discuss ongoing developments in Kosovo, regional security, and the upcoming American elections. Among other topics, Kurti urged the U.S. to pressure Belgrade to extradite Milan Radoičić to Kosovo.
They also discussed the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. Kurti reiterated Kosovo’s commitment to fully implementing the Basic Agreement and the Ohrid Implementation Annex, while emphasizing that Serbia’s acceptance of the agreement is also crucial.
Kurti called on Serbia to retract a December letter from former Prime Minister Ana Brnabić, which rejected and withdrew Serbia from the agreement. According to him, Serbia must return to and respect the agreement for its implementation to proceed. He criticized Serbia for failing to honor the agreement, which has obstructed its execution.
The meeting also covered the Banjska case. Kurti requested that the U.S. exert pressure on Serbia to ensure Radoičić’s extradition to Kosovo.
„With 11 months having passed since the murder of our police commander Afrim Bunjaku in Banjska, it is high time that the main suspect, Milan Radoičić, surrenders to the Kosovo judiciary. Prime Minister Kurti has asked the United States to press official Belgrade on this matter.“
As the anniversary of the Banjska conflict approaches, Kosovo PM underscored the „strong relations“ between Kosovo and the U.S. and expressed a desire to enhance commercial and economic exchanges with American allies and partners.
The statement from Kurti’s office did not include details on Senator Murphy’s responses during the meeting.
The Banjska incident was also discussed in a separate meeting earlier today in Belgrade. NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, Boris Ruge, met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. Ruge stated that NATO expects Serbia to assist in ensuring accountability for the Banjska events and the unrest in May outside the municipal building in Zvečan.
