The recently spray-painted bilingual road signs on the Rudare – Jarinje road are being cleaned today.
The employees of the Kosovo Ministry of Infrastructure, the ministry responsible for the maintenance of these roads, have already cleaned the spray-painted signs in Rudare and Grabovac.
Their plan is to clean all the signs all the way to Jarinje today.
Once again, these workers are being assisted by the Kosovo Police of the region north.
New bilingual traffic signs, in Albanian and Serbian, were erected on the same route exactly five days ago, while signs with Serbian names of towns written in two Serbian alphabets – Cyrillic and Latin – were removed.
Less than 24 hours later, the Albanian inscriptions were painted over with black spray paint.
Towards the end of last week, four persons were briefly detained in Leposavic in connection with the case of damage done to these signs, and only one of them was fined for „vandalism“. The police have repeatedly stated that cases are treated as misdemeanors.
The newly installed signs caused an avalanche of reactions on both the Serbian and Kosovo sides last week.
The fact that the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet was not used on the new signs was particularly brought to the fore, but also that the name was listed first in Albanian and then in Serbian, even though the signs were installed in Serb-majority areas.
This issue was highlighted by the deputy of the Kosovo ombudsman, as well as the commissioner for languages from the Office of the Prime Minister of Kosovo, who announced a meeting with Albin Kurti regarding this matter.
