A fire broke out on Wednesday morning in the tent settlement near the Serbian Parliament, known as “Ćacilend,” according to reports from Belgrade-based media.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has not yet issued a statement, but television outlet N1 reported, citing unofficial sources, that the police received a call about the fire around 10:17 a.m. at Nikola Pašić Square. The blaze has since been localized, the outlet added.

Meanwhile, a video circulating online appears to show police firing shots and detaining one individual at the scene. The footage was published by the political party Serbia Centre (SRCE).

Despite the incident unfolding just outside, parliamentary proceedings continued uninterrupted. Lawmakers are voting today on 48 items on the agenda, and according to reports, ruling party MPs remained seated in their benches, voting in turn, while presiding officer Marina Raguš made no mention of the fire or police operation taking place outside the National Assembly building.

Opposition MP Natalija Stojmenović posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Ćacilend is burning, the Parliament is locked, and security told us there is ammunition inside.”
