Despite operating in a caretaker capacity, the government in Pristina shows no signs of slowing down its activities in the north of Kosovo—even under rain, wind, and just days before the upcoming local elections.
Less than ten days before the vote, and a day after the removal of the “I Love K. Mitrovica” sign and the repainting of chairs in the Sports Hall, Kosovo authorities today set a foundation stone for the construction of a school in North Mitrovica, near the former military repair facility.
Shortly before 6 p.m., in the presence of heavy police forces, Kosovo’s caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti and acting Minister of Internal Affairs Xhelal Sveçla placed the symbolic stone within a fenced-off area near the Sports Hall, a facility taken over from local Serbs by Kosovo institutions in May.
Although the two departing officials were no longer at the site when KoSSev visited, a signboard of the Ministry of Internal Affairs had already been installed. It indicates that the project’s investor is the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation.
According to the board—written only in Albanian—the planned facility will be a school with ten grades (9+1, as defined in the Kosovo system), as well as a kindergarten. A draft sketch of the building is also displayed.
Kurti told Pristina media that the works would be completed within 18 months.
“There will be nine elementary school classes and one kindergarten section for children, as well as a library, a teachers’ common room, laboratories and so on, so that the conditions are modern for the best possible teaching and also for learning according to the highest standards. The works will be completed in 18 months, which means that we will cut the ribbon for this school in 2027. It should be noted that the school building will cover approximately 2,570 square meters, while the kindergarten will cover 761 square meters,” Kurti said.
The land itself belongs to a larger parcel that the Kosovo Ministry of Internal Affairs received for use from the Municipality of North Mitrovica two years ago.
Deputy Commander of the Kosovo Police for the North region, Veton Elshani, confirmed to KoSSev only that the caretaker prime minister and the minister of internal affairs visited North Mitrovica late this afternoon.
