In the shadow of incessant political friction between Belgrade and Pristina and damaged relations between two groups, news regarding renewed interfaith dialogue unfolding, almost completely unnoticed.
„It is a beacon of peace amidst political complexity,“ said religious leaders of five religions and religious denominations.
The Commander of the KFOR Regional Command West, Italian Colonel Mario Bozzi, hosted an interfaith gathering at the Villagio Italia KFOR base near Pec on May 4, 2023.
The meeting, during which emphasis was placed on fostering the spirit of tolerance and unity in politically complex times, brought together representatives of all important religious communities in the western part of Kosovo, primarily from Decani, Djakovica, Prizren, Pec, Junik, and Istok.
The gathered leaders of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Catholic Church, the Islamic community, Tariqat/Bektashi community, and the Jewish community, apart from the diversity itself, in a climate of mutual respect and open dialogue, they articulated the significance of coexistence, the value of understanding our diverse traditions, and the necessity of nurturing a spirit of tolerance and peace.
“While unique in our traditions, we stand united in sharing many values as followers of the Abrahamic religions,“ they announced at the gathering.
Each faith can make a significant contribution towards fostering a culture of tolerance and respect for diverse traditions, which are viewed as a societal asset rather than a burden – says one of the key messages of the meeting.
Religious representatives from these towns and municipalities often visit each other, especially on important holidays, and they have been doing so for years.
During earlier interfaith meetings, it was underlined that the 1999 conflict in the region did not occur due to religion.
