Former MP and political analyst Ilir Deda has rejected Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani’s claims about alleged “plans for a coup,” arguing that such a plot could not exist without the involvement of the Kosovo Security Force (KSF).
“A coup d’état is typically carried out by the army. Was the KSF part of this ‘coup plan’? If so, have KSF members been arrested for participating? If not, then there was no coup plan,” Deda wrote, adding that when the president herself promotes false narratives about “internal enemies” and turns journalists into targets, Kosovo begins to resemble Russia and Belarus.
The controversy follows the arrest — and subsequent release — of Jetmir Muji, a cameraman for the Paparaci portal. Muja had been filming a segment about the schooling of President Osmani’s daughters, which sparked harsh reactions from civil society and media organizations.
Addressing the incident a day later, Osmani said the public was free to criticize her but not her children. She explained that her daughters had left the “Ismail Qemali” public school for security reasons, citing threats allegedly linked to Serbia.
Speaking more broadly about security challenges, Osmani referred to investigations into “plans for a coup” and labeled unnamed journalists as “Radoičićs” — a term referencing Milan Radoičić, a controversial figure in northern Kosovo — while insisting she could not reveal names without jeopardizing the investigation.
“Journalists are not under investigation; ‘Radoičićs’ are. We are investigating coup plans. We cannot reveal names because it would obstruct the investigation. During the investigation, it was recorded who collaborated with them,” Osmani said.
Her comments drew swift criticism from media groups and experts. The Association of Journalists of Kosovo (AGK) condemned Osmani’s remarks, while media expert Flutura Kusari accused the president of mimicking Vetëvendosje’s tactics in creating narratives against the press.
Deda was equally blunt: “In Western countries, there is neither space nor political culture to allow such nonsense. Weak, very weak.”
