The Humanitarian Law Centre Kosovo (HLC Kosovo) strongly condemned the vocabulary used by the Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj to assess the actions of the former prosecutor of the Special Prosecution Office of Kosovo, Elez Blakaj. ‘A hens thief’ and ‘a coxcomb’ – were terms that Haradinaj used for Blakaj. The HLC Kosovo demands from Haradinaj withdraw his statement and publicly apologize to Blakaj and the whole prosecutorial system also. If this is not done, the HLC asks the Assembly deputies to initiate an impeachment procedure – they stated.
„Irrespective of Blakaj’s decision to withdraw from office due to the threats he received after launching an investigation into the case of fake military veterans, to assess a prosecutor as ‘a hens thief’ and ‘a coxcomb’ constitutes the most serious offense, since the proclamation of independence, one of the highest state officials in Kosovo has addressed a member of the prosecutorial system in this way. Moreover, having assessed that ‘those who were in Blace or Stankovec during the war in Kosovo do not have the right to count veterans in the Dukagjin region’, he exerted direct political influence on the prosecution“ – it is stated in the HLC press release.
They added this constitutes a dangerous precedent, which, if not reacted to and if the statement is not withdrawn, makes space for further direct interference and pressure on the prosecutorial system which is completely free from politics under the constitution and law.
„Where political officials give themselves the right to disparage and insult state judicial officials, there is no rule of law. Rather, it constitutes the reign of powerful politicians“ – the HLC Kosovo concluded.
