Bahtiri’s proposal for the „unification“ of Mitrovica adopted

Agim Bahtiri 30.11. 2018.
The Mayor of South Mitrovica, Agim Bahtiri’s proposal to start an initiative to amend the Law on administrative boundaries of municipalities with the aim to „unify Mitrovica“ was adopted by a majority vote today. Most of the deputies from the South Mitrovica municipality voted in favor of this proposal.

„I want to tell everyone that there is no one in the world who could change Agim Bahtiri’s opinion, nor was Agim Bahtiri inspired by any political party. This is my personal request and I assure you that I have never had conversations with any leader to make such a proposal,“ Bahtiri stated during today’s session of the South Mitrovica MA.

Bahtiri said that „he never fell into other peoples’ traps,“ emphasizing that he „always has his own ideas“.

The Serbs in Mitrovica „will be treated better than before“ in the event of „unification“ – he stated.

Regarding the claims of Serbs from the north that they do not have bread and medicine, Bahtiri guaranteed that not one of them will be left hungry or without health care.

During today’s session, the PDK deputy pointed out that his political option had always been to unite Mitrovica but he also reminded that Mitrovica was divided into two municipalities with Ahtisaari’s plan, a document used for the basis of which Kosovo unilaterally proclaimed independence in 2008.

„We may not like this, but it’s the reality. Ahtisaari’s package of laws was adopted by a two-third majority of deputies in the Kosovo Assembly. South Mitrovica MA, by law, can only adopt a resolution asking the government and the Kosovo Assembly to launch an initiative to unite Mitrovica. It can be our role today,“ the PDK deputy said.

At a press conference after the session, he also said that he asked the government to realize his proposal for the „unification“ of Mitrovica and that they tried to co-operate with the northern part of Mitrovica, but that did not happen, while the Mayor of North Mitrovica, Goran Rakic acted according to the instructions of Belgrade, Pristina-based Gazeta Express reported.

In addition, Bahtiri said that they also talked with the Kosovo Foreign Minister, Behgjet Pacolli and that Kosovo leaders were interested in the outcome of today’s session. He also called on Kosovo citizens to support his proposal.

Thirty-one deputies voted in favour of today’s proposal, which was made following the resignation of the Mayor of North Mitrovica, Goran Rakic.
