Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić met in New York with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss the upcoming Strategic Dialogue between Serbia and the United States and Washington’s participation in the 2027 World Expo in Belgrade, according to statements from both sides.
“Good to see Serbian President Vučić again today in New York. We discussed the Strategic Dialogue our two nations will launch soon and U.S. participation in EXPO 2027, both opportunities to further strengthen our bilateral relationship as we seek to build a better future,” Rubio wrote on X.

Vučić and Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić, who is also in New York as part of the Serbian delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, re-shared Rubio’s post on the platform.
Strategic Dialogue With Serbia Moves Ahead as Kosovo Talks Stall
The meeting comes at a time when the United States has suspended its Strategic Dialogue with Kosovo, citing recent decisions by Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s government which Washington says have “heightened tensions and instability” and undermined productive cooperation.
In contrast, the Strategic Dialogue with Serbia — launched in 2024 and formalized in 2025 — is moving forward. It aims to deepen cooperation in areas such as the economy, energy diversification, defense and regional stability. The first formal meeting within the process is expected by the end of the year.
The process also includes cooperation with the Pupin Initiative and Serbia’s long-standing partnership with the Ohio National Guard.
Diplomatic Push in New York
Vučić’s meeting with Rubio is part of a wider diplomatic agenda in New York. The Serbian president is scheduled to address world leaders later today during the plenary session of UNGA 80, speaking as the thirteenth head of state after Argentina’s Javier Milei.
Previously, Vučić met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and held a string of meetings with foreign officials in the run-up to his speech — all taking place amid ongoing global crises and shifting diplomatic alignments.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Đurić has been holding meetings on the sidelines of the assembly with African leaders, as well as with his Hungarian and Georgian counterparts.
Kosovo Leaders Also in New York
Kosovo’s Foreign Minister Donika Gervalla is also in New York this week, while President Vjosa Osmani met with Brendan Hanrahan, a senior State Department official, in an effort to repair ties after the suspension of the Strategic Dialogue with Kosovo.
“I once again confirmed the vital importance of our alliance with the United States, which is the foundation of our national security, regional stability and our path to Euro-Atlantic integration,” Osmani wrote after the meeting.
Osmani also met Hanrahan in July, ahead of his visit to the region. Hanrahan, viewed as part of the circle around Senator Rubio and as a representative of a new generation of U.S. diplomats in the Balkans, made his first visit to Serbia and Kosovo this summer — the first such visit by a senior U.S. official since President Donald Trump took office earlier this year.
