KFOR Rejects Kosovo’s Request to Deploy KSF in the North

The NATO-led KFOR mission confirmed last night that Kosovo had requested authorization to deploy its Security Force (KSF) to the northern region following an explosion at the Ibar-Lepenac canal. However, the mission stated in response to an inquiry from KoSSev that the request was denied.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated on Sunday during an emergency address that Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti had sought permission for the deployment of KSF immediately after the explosion but was rebuffed by KFOR.

Kurti, however, has refrained from explicitly mentioning plans to send the KSF to the northern region, which requires KFOR’s approval under a 2013 agreement between Kosovo institutions and NATO. Speaking after visiting security checkpoints in Obilic and Vucitrn on Saturday, Kurti acknowledged the engagement of KSF for patrolling and monitoring critical infrastructure across various locations in Kosovo, citing heightened security concerns.

KFOR Rejects Request

In a statement to KoSSev, KFOR confirmed the request but emphasized that the decision to deny authorization was based on a security assessment.

“In accordance with the 2013 commitment signed between the Institutions in Kosovo and NATO, the Institutions in Kosovo have requested authorization from the KFOR Commander for a potential deployment of KSF units to the affected area in northern Kosovo. The KFOR Commander has not given such authorization, based on his security assessment and the actions already undertaken by KFOR,” the mission stated.

KFOR further clarified that its forces have already been deployed to secure the area in Zubin Potok, where the canal was damaged. They have also offered logistical and explosive ordnance disposal support to Kosovo institutions.

The mission reiterated its commitment to maintaining its UN-mandated role of ensuring a safe and secure environment, working closely with the Kosovo Police and EULEX.
