„We harshly criticize the denial of territorial integrity and violation of the Constitution of Serbia“, i.e. the „promotion“ of Kosovo – reads the message the Student Parliament sent to the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade, after a photo was published on social networks, allegedly taken in the premises of this faculty, showing a desk sign with the inscription „Kosovo“ and the Kosovo flag.
The public learned that a desk sign with the inscription „Kosovo“ was allegedly placed in the premises of the Faculty of Political Sciences after the FPN Student Parliament reported on it, followed by Belgrade-based media.
„Empty chair for Kosovo* at the Faculty of Political Sciences,“ said the Student Parliament in a Facebook post last night.
They harshly condemned the display and “promotion of the so-called Republic of Kosovo in the premises of the faculty“.
„The FPN student parliament believes that the act of displaying the name and flag of the fake state of Kosovo is unacceptable, which in these difficult moments for our country represents a direct mockery of our people in Kosovo,“ they stated.
They addressed the Faculty of Political Sciences, stating that this institution has, above all, a moral obligation oversee the education of young people in accordance with the interests of Serbia and its citizens, but also an obligation to respect the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia.
The administration of the Faculty of Political Sciences reacted today, saying that they have not received any complaint regarding the possible violation of norms arising from the Agreement on Regional Representation and Cooperation between Belgrade and Pristina.
„Nevertheless, the importance of this issue dictates that we must examine the circumstances and facts concerning the photo recently published on social networks, allegedly taken on August 24 at the Faculty of Political Sciences. One of the Faculty’s lecture halls can be seen in the photo, and two empty chairs and a table with the sign with the inscription ‘Kosovo’, without an asterisk and a corresponding footnote, are shown,“ they said.
Furthermore, they added that they are dealing with the case, and that they will take measures prescribed by the Law and the Statute once the relevant facts are established.
„There should be no doubt that the Administration of the Faculty of Political Sciences strongly condemns any act that denies territorial integrity and violates the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia,“ they underlined.
Brussels agreement on regional representation
According to the agreement on the regional representation of Kosovo that was reached on February 24, 2012 in Brussels – ‘Kosovo*’ (Kosovo with an asterisk) is the only name that will be used within the framework of regional cooperation.
In addition to this agreement, in 2013 the Government of Serbia also adopted an instruction on the participation and behavior of Serb state bodies at regional gatherings in which Kosovo also participates under the conditions stipulated in the Brussels Agreement on Regional Representation.
Shortly after its signing, the then Deputy Prime Minister of Kosovo and head of the Kosovo negotiation team, Edita Tahiri, commented that the footnote was actually „a snowflake that will melt when the winter is over.“
Whether Kosovo will be represented by an asterisk or not has been one of the stumbling blocks in the relations between Belgrade and Pristina for years. The Pristina side repeatedly stormed out of conferences and gatherings when Kosovo was presented with a footnote. On the other hand, the representatives of Belgrade also canceled their participation in the conferences or left them if Kosovo was presented without a footnote or an asterisk, because Pristina did not respect what was agreed upon in the Brussels dialogue.
