The Working Group of the National Convention on the European Union for Chapter 35 called for an urgent de-escalation of the crisis in the north of Kosovo through the implementation of the three-point plan proposed by the European Commission: The withdrawal of members of the special police units from three municipalities, for the new mayors to carry out their functions outside the municipal buildings and the announcement of new local elections.
The members of this Working Group underlined their deep concern about the events in the north of Kosovo and invited representatives of Belgrade and Pristina governments to urgently take necessary measures.
They also asked for a swift response from the European Union and Quint countries in order to implement the de-escalation plan more quickly.
In a press release issued today, they condemned the series of incidents and moves recently made in the north.
“We condemn every kind of violence in the north of Kosovo, whether it was conducted by the special police units of Kosovo against the members of the Serb ethnic community, or by hooligans against journalists or KFOR,” the members of this Working Group underlined.
Furthermore, they especially condemned violence against children – as the most vulnerable members of society.
The Working Group called on EULEX and human rights organizations to investigate all cases of “police brutality against children, civilians, and detainees,” and to publicly report on their findings and conclusions.
Also, they call on KFOR and EULEX to form an independent commission that would investigate all the circumstances of the recent arrest of the members of the Kosovo police.
“This case must not remain the product of different interpretations by officials in Belgrade and Pristina, because over time the process of normalization of relations and reconciliation between Albanians and Serbs will be significantly disrupted,” the Working Group of the National Convention on the European Union for Chapter 35 said.
Moreover, they call on relevant authorities in Serbia to speed up the process of assessing the criminal responsibility of the arrested Kosovo police officers:
“And if it does not exist, to release them immediately.”
On the other hand, they also demand the immediate withdrawal of measures aimed at suspending the Agreement on the Free Movement of Goods and People.
“They directly influence the normalization of trade and represent the basis for building the future of our region,” they concluded.
