Nearly 500 children will have the opportunity to attend classes in a new Albanian-language school in North Mitrovica from the spring of 2027, the Self-Determination Movement (Vetëvendosje – LVV) announced on Friday evening.
Less than ten days before local elections, Kosovo’s Prime Minister in a technical mandate, Albin Kurti, together with several acting ministers and the current mayor of North Mitrovica, laid the foundation stone for the new school yesterday. The building will be located in the northern part of the city, near the former Military Repair Facility.
The construction site lies on a parcel that Kosovo’s Ministry of Internal Affairs received for use from the municipality of North Mitrovica two years ago. The cornerstone was placed just next to the Sports Hall—taken over by Kosovo authorities from local Serbs in May.
A board posted on the site and bearing the logo of the Ministry of Internal Affairs states that the investor is the Kosovo Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation. It specifies that the project includes a ten-grade school (nine plus one, as in the Kosovo system) and a kindergarten, accompanied by a layout sketch. The sign is written exclusively in Albanian.
Despite poor weather and under heavy police presence, Kurti and several acting ministers—Interior Minister Xhelal Sveçla, Agriculture Minister Faton Peci, Education Minister Arbërie Nagavci —as well as the current and candidate mayor of North Mitrovica, Erden Atić, attended the ceremony.
Kurti confirmed that the school is expected to be completed within 18 months.
“There will be nine primary school classes and one kindergarten section, along with a library, teachers’ room, laboratories, and other facilities, ensuring modern conditions for both teaching and learning at the highest standards. The construction works will be completed within 18 months, meaning we will cut the ribbon in 2027. The total area of the school will be approximately 2,570 square meters, with an additional 761 square meters for the kindergarten,” Kurti said.
For Atić, the project represents a “historic step” as it will be the first Albanian-language school in the northern part of the city.
“A kindergarten will also operate within the same building, providing support for families and children from the community. With this foundation stone, we are building the future, knowledge, and hope for a new generation of our city,” Atić stated.
Self-Determination later reiterated that the school will accommodate nearly 500 children.
“Nearly 500 children will have the opportunity to attend classes in this new school from the spring of 2027. This €4.1 million investment from the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation is a long-awaited and essential project for local residents,” the party said in a statement, adding that the facility will provide “a modern and suitable environment for both students and teachers.”
