Kosovo Police have issued a warning to the public about scams in which an unknown individual impersonates a senior police official and solicits money.
According to police, the suspect posed as Veton Elshani, the commander of the Regional Police Directorate – North, or his deputy, and contacted citizens via phone and messaging apps.
The warning follows several reported cases. On September 10, two residents of South Mitrovica sent money to a person claiming to be Elshani, who requested funds for a sick child. A similar case was reported this morning by a resident of Zubin Potok.
Police said the latest victim was contacted via Viber by someone falsely claiming to be Elshani and was asked to transfer money.
“The victim sent €1,000 through Western Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina. After the money was sent, the suspect cut off communication,” the statement reads.
Authorities have opened a fraud investigation and are urging citizens to exercise caution.
“We appeal to citizens not to fall for phone scams or suspicious messages, which mostly originate from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. Do not trust individuals who falsely present themselves as police officers and request money. Do not send financial funds through unsecured channels,” Kosovo Police said.
